As producers and manufacturers of packaging and label products strive to keep up with changing consumer demands, the next generation of inkjet printing technology is reshaping how and where packaging is produced.
As WestPack , the first big packaging event of the year, gets underway, we look at the trends that are driving these changes and highlight solutions that will ensure label and package production is keeping pace in a shifting marketplace.
Inkjet in the Mainstream
In 2016, digital inkjet solutions showed significant momentum as a mainstream technology. This momentum is certainly carrying into 2017.
Today, label and packaging providers aren’t wondering if and when they should move to inkjet; instead, they’re asking what solution would best meet their needs and from whom they should buy it.
Memjet partners now offer a wide variety of solutions that bring enhanced capability and affordability to the labeling and packaging market. These solutions are meeting the demands of providers, but are also bringing package and label production directly to the manufacturer’s operation.
Look at the Xante Excelagraphix 4800, for example. This digital, corrugated wide-format solution gives both manufacturers and packaging suppliers a fast and easy way to produce the customized packaging that consumers and e-commerce companies are demanding. You can read more about the power of customized packaging by downloading a copy of our recent white paper.
Our partner Afinia Label has created powerful, affordable labeling solutions that let manufacturers take control of their own label production. For example, the Afinia L801 brings high-resolution, vibrant, full-color label printing to manufacturers at an ultra-low cost of ownership.
Using the Afinia L801, one such manufacturer, Kanani Foods, realized a 94 percent savings in labor by bringing its label production in-house. You can read more about how they company was able to achieve these results by clicking here.

And finally, this year you can also expect to see flexo printers using retrofit digital inkjet solutions as a way to leverage their existing equipment to capture the business opportunities of short print runs in their operations.
An example of this is the Colordyne 3600 Series Retrofit, which is also offered by Mark Andy. You can read about this solution on this blog post.
More growth will come from solutions that combine multiple applications into one system, such as the Trojan3 and New Solution Multi. With these combination solutions, providers can invest in just one product and produce several packaging applications on a wide variety of substrates such as folded boxes, flexible packaging, and padded envelopes.
